Kalahari

From the Kalahari Sands to the Namib Desert
Kgalagadi Transfrontier-Park, Fish River Canyon & Namib Sand Sea

14 Days

In October 2007, the Presidents of Namibia, South Africa and Botswana officially inaugurated the opening of the post frontier of Mata-Mata. This new direct access from Namibia to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was a highly anticipated event since it allowed us to create a special journey which takes you from the red sands of the Kalahari Desert to the Namib Desert where you can admire the highest dunes in the world. During this desert tour Namibia which starts in South Africa's Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, you will discover the Kalahari's wildlife present near Nossob and Aub, ancient valleys surrounded by red dunes which are sprinkled with acacias. Once back in Namibia, we will head for the Fish River Canyon, which is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Heading north we will visit the Namib wild horses before ending our trip among Sossusvlei's high dunes. We will alternate between camping sites and lodging. Do not hesitate to contact us should you prefer more comfortable accommodation.

Guided Tour program

Day 1:

Windhoek – Kalahari Desert

Meet and greet at the airport with immediate departure for an overnight stay at Kalahari Farm House in the Namibian Kalahari.

Day 2 to 5:

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

A half a day drive will take us to the Mata-Mata border post where we will enter into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Four days are just right for exploring the South-African Kalahari landscapes sprinkled with red dunes where an abundance of wildlife roams. Along the Nossob fossilized river, which flows once a century (last dating 1963) it is quite common to encounter large herds of eland, oryx, springbok, wildebeest and red Hartebeest. Besides predators like black maned lions, we may also see cheetahs, leopards as well as the more elusive brown hyena. But one must not neglect the delight of catching sight of smaller wildlife such as suricates, bat-eared foxes, honey badgers or African wild cats. We will be camping at night at Mata-Mata, Nossob or Twee-Rivieren according to availability.

Day 6:

Quiver Tree Rest Camp

We exit the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and head back to Namibia to the Kalahari Game Lodge where we will stop for the night. In the afternoon you can go for a Game Drive organised by the lodge (optional). In the evening we enjoy dinner at the restaurant.

Day 7&8:

Fish River Canyon, Namibia

This morning we will visit the Kokerboom Forest, which is the largest quiver tree concentration (aloe dichotoma) on the continent. After that we head to the Gondwana Nature Park, a huge private nature reserve situated at the edge of the Fish River. We will settle for two night at the Canyon Road House bungalows. The canyon is the second largest in the world (160 km long, 27 km wide and 550 meters deep). We will visit the different viewpoints until sunset.

Day 9:

Klein Aus Vista Eagle's Nest – Desert wild horses

We enter into one of the wildest national parks of Namibia: the Kaudom. Situated in Bushmanland, this sumptuous sanctuary shelters a large number of mammals including elephants, giraffes, roan antelopes as well as predators such as lions and wild dogs. Our fist game drive will take us to Soncana waterhole where we'll stay until sunset. We camp overnight at Sikereti camp situated to the south of the reserve.

Day 10

Lüderitz – Eagle's Nest

Full day excursion to Lüderitz, a small coastal town situated 122 km west where we will visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop and the Diaz point. We will have lunch in a restaurant before going back to Klein Aus Vista Eagle's Nest in the afternoon.

Day 11

The Namib Desert – NamibRand Nature Reserve

Heading north on the D 707 road, we will drive on one of the most scenic southern gravel roads. In the Namib-Naukluft Park, we will catch sight of the first Namib Desert dunes. We reach NamibRand which is one of the largest private reserves on the continent. We will set up our camp for the night at an exclusive campsite. We will be alone at this campsite, very well equipped. We will visit the private reserve in our vehicle by following 4X4 tracks. Walking by foot will be an option.

Day 12

The Namib Desert – Sesriem

Less than half a day is needed to reach Sesriem, the starting point for reaching the highest dunes in the world. We set up our last camp for one night. We will visit Sesriem canyon and Elim Dune later in the afternoon.
You may stay at Sossus Dune Lodge (optional, refer to prices).

Day 13

Sossusvlei – Windhoek

This morning we will make a start before sunrise to discover the great dunes of the Namib Desert. The different shades of orange combined with the presence of oryx, ostriches and springboks are a beautiful sight. The ascent of a 250-meter high dune is optional for the bravest. From the top, you will be able to admire an endless sea of sand. We will leave the desert later in the afternoon. On the road to reach the Khomas Hochland plateau, we overnight on a farm in villas.
